As the name implies, Chaitra Navratri is a nine-day celebration dedicated to nine different incarnations of Maa Durga. It is said that during these days, Durga Mata descends from heaven to live among her devotees. It is therefore seen to be the most advantageous stage. The Ghatasthapana rite, which marks the beginning of a nine-day festival, is considered to be the most auspicious one during Navratri. History Of Chaitra Navratri

The Brahma Purana states that Lord Brahma began creating the universe on the day of Chaitra Pratipada, at Goddess Durga's request. Thus, by the Hindu calendar, this day is regarded as the first day of the year. It is also thought that on the third day of Chaitra Navratri, Lord Vishnu took on the form of Matsya to establish Mother Earth. The ninth day of Chaitra Navratri, which is popularly known as 'Navami' or 'Ram Navami' marks the birth of Lord Rama who is one of the great avatars or incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Another legend states that Goddess Parvati once requested permission from Her consort, Lord Shiva, to spend nine days visiting Her parents. She then started walking toward their house.  During this period, She took the form of goddess Durga and killed the demon named 'Mahishasura'.
