Bhadrapada Purnima Katha

Matsya Puran states that Uma Maheswar Vrat Katha is read on Bhadrapada Purnima 2024 to remind us of certain life lessons, following the celebration of Pooja and Vrat. It starts with:

  • Durvasa, a Rishi Muni, traveled to Kailash Parvat to ask Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati for their blessings. Lord Shiva handed him a garland made of Bail leaves in exchange.
  • Durvasa first went to Lord Shiva to ask for his blessings before going to Vishnu Lok.
  • He presented his garland, which Lord Shiva had given him, to Lord Vishnu, but the latter wrapped it around Gadua’s neck instead of wearing it.
  • Seeing Lord Vishnu’s action, Rishi Durvasa became enraged. He suddenly cursed him, saying that since he had disrespected the garland that Lord Shiva had given him, Goddess Lakshmi would leave him and Sheshnaag would no longer be able to help him.
  • Upon hearing this, Lord Vishnu respectfully requested Rishi Durvasa to provide a method of lifting the curse.
  • Observing his kind demeanor, Rishi Durvasa commanded him to observe the Uma-Maheshwar Vrat (fast), upon which he would reclaim all of his lost possessions.
  • Thus, as a result of this fast, both Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu received everything back.
